# How do you decide whether the variance is known or unknown?

Variance is known or unknown.

I believe it is simply when the population variance is given to you or not i.e you will already have the population variance because the variance has been calculated before from the population.I would guess this is not a common occurrence as generally data on the entire population is not known, so in most cases you would be calculating an approximation of the population variance using sample variance.
