Resolved: Excel practice exam 3 - not clear solution
Hey,
I'm going through intro to excel course and i've found practice exam 3 somewhat confusing. In question 5 the hint is NOT to take into consideration rows marked as "total" and the explanation is to use specific function (want to avoid spoilers so i'm not pasting here the function, but you can check it in Q5 solution) and then take the sum of first ten rows but if we do so then we get -17.5 mln while the correct answer is -8.8 mln. Because this function sums everything, each line AND totals, we need to divide everything by 2 to get the correct result. Alternatively, we can do a sumifs function for totals only, or for each partner company not being total but that would be painful. Just wanted to share my POV, in case someone else struggles with understanding what's happening here :)
Cheers!
EDIT:// just googled that it is also possible to do sumifs but instead of for "Total" we can use "<>Total" which means for everything except total.
Hi Grzegorz,
Good to hear from you. Recently I received feedback that this task is a bit confusing, so we might consider changing it if we receive additional feedback.
The idea is that you should make the calculation in the second sheet called ' Output' after you have done the operations required in tasks 1-4.
Best,
Ned
Hi Ned,
Thanks for the reply. This is something i wasn't sure as well. The question is to calculate first 10 rows in "Output" tab and exclude totals, so at first i thought i need to calculate totals for combination of code & item & partner company, while in fact it's just about first 10 codes/items and "partner company" from "Output" tab is not really relevant here, it just matters to exclude partner company totals from "Data" tab. From my perspective it'd be easier if it said "in output sheet what is the sum of amount for first 10 codes/items (please exclude totals)" or something like that.
Best,
Grzegorz
