Sample means vs variables in sample

in Statistics / Population variance unknown, t-score

We're using standard error not standard deviation.. why are we assuming that the values in the dataset are nine sample means and not just nine individual values in one sample?

It's just how we approach the problem from the beginning. We assume that we have 9 different sample means.
