Shouldn't previous month's total sales be less than the total sales of previous 3 months which in turn be less than the total sales of previous 6 months? I understand the DAX formula is correct. I believe the context is lost in translation.

I got a solution using DATESINPERIOD instead of DATEADD.
All three formulas do not calculate the total sales.
If you put them in a Matrix Table together with the [TotalSalesAmount] and dim_Date data hierarchy (excluding Quarter), you will get a comprehensible context:
